Why I win the "Bad Mom of the Year" Award

As if poor Chase doesn't have enough on his plate with torticollis, physical therapy and the helmet...we've added to it. Over the weekend, he fell down some stairs and fractured his leg!

Sunday evening, Cole was eating dinner and Chase was playing nearby in the great room. When I left Chase alone just long enough to help Cole cut up some of his dinner, the little guy crawled over by the stairs and toppled down, landing on a hardwood floor. We didn't have a gate up in front of those stairs, and we should have.

We took him to the ER right away. X-rays were taken and the doctor didn't see anything wrong. However, he put on a temporary splint and referred us to a pediatric orthopaedist. So, today we saw the orthopaedist, who immediately spotted the fracture. The poor baby is now wearing a cast on his right leg. On top of that, and just to be on the safe side, Dr. G also stablized his hip, even though the x-rays didn't show any damage to the hip. He made a brace that goes around his waist and down the back of his leg to stablize it. (So diapers changes will now be fun because we'll have to remove 3 ACE bandages and a hip brace each time!)

We will go back in 4 weeks to have the brace and cast removed and to have more x-rays taken. I'm hoping that by then he will have healed and will no longer need to wear the cast. And, in the meantime, Mommy and Daddy will be shopping for a baby gate for in front of those stairs.

And, in typical Chase fashion, he is still smiling and just rolling with the flow. He figured out how to crawl in his temporary splint by dragging his leg behind him. I'm sure it won't take long to figure out how to crawl in his cast either.

Can you just bottle up Chase's easy-going personality for the rest of us moms. What a trooper your little man is! Don't feel bad, you just got unlucky. Ashley fell down our stairs yesterday. We just got lucky and she didn't get hurt. Hang in there! (Both of you) The cast will be off before you know it.
